Your First Bikini Wax…Let’s Talk About It.
What to Expect and How to Prepare
If you're new to waxing, welcome! Maybe you've heard the horror stories and thought, there is no way I'm ever doing that. It's painful. The positions are awkward. And you have to undress in front of a stranger?
Well, yes and no. Here's an honest guide to your first wax, from an esthetician who has been there (and has coached plenty of first-timers through it).
How to Find a Good Waxer
The most important step is finding a clean, fast, and experienced waxer. Ask friends for referrals and read online reviews, and look for a studio that follows strict hygiene practices, like fresh disposable applicators and no double-dipping.
Yes, you'll probably feel a little uncomfortable the first time. A great waxer knows how to put you at ease so quickly that you forget you're bottomless in front of someone you just met.
Does Waxing Hurt?
Let's be real: there's no such thing as a completely pain-free wax, but there is such a thing as a comfortable one. Think about it. Millions of people get waxed regularly because the experience is tolerable, and an experienced waxer knows how to make it that way.
Why the "weird" positions? They keep the skin taut, which prevents lifting and bruising, and they let the hair be removed from the root so it doesn't break.
How to Prepare for Your First Wax
Exfoliate gently the day before. Dry brushing removes dead skin cells and helps loosen hairs for a cleaner removal.
Grow your hair to about 1/4 inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice, so the wax can grip it properly.
Consider a pain reliever. Many clients take over-the-counter ibuprofen about 30 minutes before their appointment to ease discomfort. Check with your doctor first if it isn't right for you.
Be careful with numbing cream. If you use one, tell your waxer so she can cleanse the skin properly and watch for reactions. Personally, I'm not a fan, because numbed skin can't tell how hot the wax is.
Skip tanning, hot baths, and heavy lotion right before your appointment.
My Go-To Technique: Breathe
Breathing is part of my routine for every first-timer. I coach clients through their breathing as I remove each strip, and the response is always great. Relaxing your body reduces tension, and tension is what makes waxing hurt more.
Low Pain Tolerance? Take Baby Steps
If you're nervous, start small. I always suggest beginning with a basic bikini wax. Tell your waxer how you're feeling, and at your next appointment you can take off a little more, working your way up to a full Brazilian at your own pace.
Why Wax? The Benefits of Waxing vs. Shaving
Hair grows back finer and sparser over time
Regrowth is slower, so you only need to wax every 4 to 6 weeks
Maintenance is easier
No stubble, unlike shaving
Smoother, longer-lasting results
You feel groomed, confident, and yes, sexier
